This basic kit (Microgreen Rect. Tray 330x245mm) which gives you everything you need to get started except for the seeds. You get one tray plus a grill insert, 3 L of Vermiculite growing medium(crushed rock that has been heated to give it a popcorn like effect, good for holding air and water). 250 ml of bio activated organic fertiliser, 1 foldout insect trap, 1 Perspex tool for flattening the growing medium and pressing the seeds into it plus the option of a cover.
Regarding the cover if you are just going to be using small seeds such as broccoli, cress, kale etc then it’s best just to cover them with another layer of the Vermiculite. However if you doing larger seeds such as SnowPea FieldPea and even Radish then the cover is very useful not only does it save you another layer of vermiculite when it comes to the SnowPea it allows you to keep check on seeds that may have started to rot. See the SnowPea seeds and check out the procedure that I use.
The other thing that you will need is a sheet of paper towel, I purchased the cheap ones at Coles that only have one layer (easier for the roots to penetrate), these paper towels have the perfect width to fit the tray as you will need this to stop the vermiculite falling through the holes in the tray. Of course you can also purchase much more expensive solutions such as hemp matting but the costs compared to paper towel are significantly different.
Another option is to use coconut fibre mixed or not with some of vermiculite, as the base layer, when this is damp it will hold together and not fall through the slots, and then just use the vermiculite as a covering when necessary. I used to use this method, the reason I stopped is that it’s much easier just to use the vermiculite as the coconut fibre has to be rehydrated and that’s just another step that I can do without in a busy day, but having said that when mixed with the vermiculite it will give you slightly better results.

There are basically 2 types of sprouting systems one which is a stacked system where water is dribbled down from one layer to another and the other is the manual rinsing method, eg glass jar with mesh lid. What we've discovered is that the basic colander combined with a Perspex lid that can breath is a much better and simpler solution. Unlike the other systems it excels in all 4 steps of the sprouting process. 1 – overnight soaking in nutrient solution. 2 – daily rinse and soak in nutrient rich solution (greatly increasing the nutritional benefits of your sprouts). 3 – removal of un-sprouted seed and husk, which can cause bad bacteria to develop if not removed. 4 – storage in the refrigerator.
Our systems are made up of 2 sprouting colander sizes, if your sprouting needs are small then just several of the small colanders is a sufficient, however as your needs grow you can add the larger colanders which again simplify the procedure and make storage and husk removal simpler. Here we have a collection of Microgreen growing kits along with the parts that make up the kits. They are divided into groups based on the tray type used to grow the Microgreen. The kits can also be used to grow longer term green leaf herbs such as basil.
There are 2 rectangular trays to choose from one is narrower and longer this is ideal for bookshelves, window ledges or kitchen bench. The other one is not as long but wider so takes up a little bit more depth but is a little bit more flexible with a few more options e.g. variable reservoir depths, ideal for thirsty microgreens such as Snow Peas. The 2 rectangular trays each come with optional stands which you can also attach lights to if you do not have a well lit area to grow your microgreens. The kits all come with growing medium to get you started along with organic bio activated fertiliser. Click to hide.
