Hydrogen Peroxide + Pipette + Optional 750ml Spray Bottle
1 – I use Hydrogen Peroxide or H2O2, in a spray bottle for Microgreens i.e. spraying the seeds and the paper towel at the base of the tray.
The H2O2 has 2 functions one is it releases oxygen into the water and it also counteracts any mould that may lie dormant attached to the outside of the seeds.
I recommend adding 3 mls to a 750 ml spray bottle, a full pipette is 3 mls. It is generally recommended to keep the H2O2 in the refrigerator to minimise evaporation, I personally store in the freezer, it does not freeze, further reducing its tendency to evaporate.
2 – Another important use for H2O2 is its ability to increase germination, with sprouts you just need to add it to the initial overnight soak, not too much as you will not be using a litre of water plus nutrient for the initial soak so maybe just 1 or 2 mil. With regard to Microgreens you are generally adding 800 to 1000 mil of water plus nutrient so you can use the full pipette i.e. 3 ml.
(30ml) of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide 500ml water
(3ml) of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide 150ml water
(3ml) of 35-percent hydrogen peroxide 500-1000ml water
(1ml) of 35-percent hydrogen peroxide 150ml water
Recent scientific studies back up the effectiveness of chemically scarifying seeds by soaking them in a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Hydrogen peroxide is thought to increase germination rates by breaking down the seed coat, thus allowing the seed to take in more oxygen. In a study reported in the journal “HortScience,” aged corn seeds (Zea mays L.) treated with a solution of 15 percent hydrogen peroxide germinated at a significantly greater percentage (nearly 95 percent) than seeds treated with aerated water but no hydrogen peroxide (67 percent germination rate). In addition, oxygen consumption rates of seeds soaked for 24 hours in the hydrogen peroxide solution were approximately twice as high as seeds soaked in aerated water for the same time.
