This basic kit (Micro Green Kit 230mm Round Tray Kit - 1) which gives you everything you need to get started except for the seeds. You get one tray plus a grill insert, 2 L of Vermiculite growing medium(crushed rock that has been heated to give it a popcorn like effect, good for holding air and water). 250 ml of bio activated organic fertiliser, 1 foldout insect trap, 1 Perspex tool for flattening the growing medium and pressing the seeds into it. The kit also comes with a small cover which makes it easier to add the growing medium i.e. stops it falling down through the watering hole, there are also 2 supports that sit underneath the grill to ensure the optimum height of the grill in the tray.

Here we see the 230mm tray with grill being used to grow a range of different microgreens , the growing medium in these pictures is a mix of vermiculite and coconut fibre, this is a really good combination for microgreens, 1 of the advantages is that when the mix is relatively moist it will not fill through the grill meaning you do not need to cover the grill with paper towel, however it doesn't mean you need to do that extra step of rehydrating the coconut fibre, for this reason I find it more convenient just to use the vermiculite. Here we see the 230mm tray with grill being used to grow SnowPea as a microgreens , in this picture there is no growing medium and the roots are growing directly through the grill into the nutrient solution below, if you want to do it this way the best method is to germinate the SnowPea's externally in a colander for instance after a couple of days when the roots begin to emerge place them on top of the grill and add the cover along with the nutrient solution in the base that comes up to just cover the top of the grill. Give it a quick check each day and make sure the roots are going in the right direction some of them may need a little realignment. Click to hide.

Here we see the 230mm tray with grill being used to grow Basil as a potted herb, purchased from the supermarket/greengrocer, the trickier just begin with water as the pots already have a certain amount of slow release fertiliser, so just cover the grill when adding the water so the pots remain moist after some time the roots will grow down through into the reservoir below, at this stage you may need to add some of the nutrient solution to the water in the reservoir. This tool is used in this situation to firstly flatten the surface of the growing medium, and then to gently press the seeds into the growing medium, so that the moisture from the growing medium comes in contact with the seeds (more important with respect to large seeds like peas where you are just using the cover) also if you are covering with a medium then use this tool to press the covering material down onto the seeds. Can be used to grow arrange of microgreens, personally I use a paper towel to cover the grill and then use vermiculite as the growing medium. It can also be used to grow small potted herbs, in this configuration you just add the herb to the grill, flood the grill until the roots penetrate into the reservoir below, at this stage you may need to add some of the nutrient solution to the water in the reservoir. Here seen grown in 1 of our light stands which is specifically designed for narrow spaces such as a cupboard or a kitchen bench.
