This 470x170mm Tray with Grill fits our various narrow depth stands.

This basic kit (Microgreen Rect. Tray 470x170mm + Grill) which gives you everything you need to get started except for the seeds. You get 1 tray(Grey or Terracotta col.), a grill insert (with extras) used for microgreens or supporting small pot plants, 2L of Vermiculite growing medium (crushed rock that has been heated to give it a popcorn like effect, good for holding air and water). 250ml of bio activated organic fertiliser, 1 fold-out insect trap, 1 Perspex tool for flattening the growing medium and pressing the seeds into it.
You also have the option of a cover this is highly recommended if you are growing microgreens such as Broccoli, Kale, Radish, SnowPea, but obviously not necessary if using for small pots or if you growing longer term microgreens i.e. longer than 2 or 3 weeks e.g. Rocket, Cress, Coriander as these are best covered by another layer of the Vermiculite so not needing the cover.

Here we see Rocket being grown in vermiculite on top of the grill. This does not need the cover as you just cover the grill with the growing medium flatten out then sprinkle 2 rows of rocket seed, or similar. These seeds are very tiny so make sure you don't put too many e.g. 1 per centimetre, spray with water, (I use filtered water with hydrogen peroxide, which promotes germination and kills any mould that may be on the seed coating). Here we see the stages involved in preparing the grill with a paper towel to grow Micro-greens. The good thing about the size of the grill is that it fits perfectly 2 sheets of paper towel, and the edges fold over and hang down into the reservoir giving you a capillary mat situation which will siphon water up from the reservoir keeping the growing medium moist during germination and until the roots have grown through the grill into the reservoir. Here we can see the grill being used with punnets in 2 slightly different ways. The top picture shows where paper towel has been added to the grill this allows you to put the punnets directly onto the grill and the paper towel will siphon the water up to the punnets obviously only necessary until the roots of the plant penetrate the grill. The 2nd method is without the paper towel, you can just make sure you flood the grill every few days to make sure the punnets have enough moisture until the roots penetrate through the grill, or you can just leave the punnets in the tray until you see the roots protruding through the base of the punnets and then insert the grill and place on top. Here we see 1 of the 2 Perspex clamps holding the cover in place, and 2 of the 4 grill lifters. If you are using the cover then these clamps are very very useful as due to the narrow width of these trays the seeds will very quickly lift the cover-up and it may fall off. The lifters are not used very often and generally only if you want to do the SnowPea without a growing medium the only advantage is that it allows for a larger reservoir which can be useful with Snow Pea's as they consume a lot of water. It is something that we developed a long time ago but do not use much anymore but the grill still has the slots available for their attachment so we include them anyway just in case. Click to hide

Here we see the cover being lifted off Radish Micro-greens being grown in Coco fibre. As mentioned previously the cover performs 2 major functions, 1st it gives the seeds something to press against allowing their roots to push into the growing medium and 2, it creates a humid environment which promotes germination. You can also see in the left-hand edge of the picture where the cover of the grill has a cable tie attached to it to allow for it to be easily removed like a small handle. Click to hide

Here we can see Cress seeds being grown as micro-greens just prior to removing the cover, you can see how the clamp is holding the cover in place i.e. forcing the roots to penetrate the growing medium. The next step is to remove the cover and then spray vigourously which forces some of the shoots that have been lifted up by neighbouring growth and forces them back down against the growing medium, repeat this process a few times to ensure that any of the growing medium that has stuck to the leaves is also washed off. Hydrogen Peroxide + Pipette + Optional 750ml Spray Bottle.
I use Hydrogen Peroxide or H2O2 in a spray bottle for Microgreens i.e. spraying the seeds and the paper towel at the base of the tray.
The H2O2 has 2 functions one is it releases oxygen into the water and it also counteracts any mould that may lie dormant attached to the outside of the seeds.
I recommend adding 3 mls to a 750 ml spray bottle, a full pipette is 3 mls. It is generally recommended to keep the H2O2 in the refrigerator to minimise evaporation, I personally store in the freezer, it does not freeze, further reducing its tendency to evaporate.
