Seeds – we carry a range of seeds that are primarily targeted for Sprouting, Microgreens and Food, and of course some of the seeds fit into 2 or more categories.
The question of organic or not organic. We would ideally like all our seeds to be organic, however this is often not possible, either due to price or availability issues.
We put an emphasis on the seeds we use for food, to be organic, as they are cooked or eaten directly. However, the Sprouts and Microgreens, are grown for a period of time, using organic nutrients, meaning, that they are well on their way to being an organic product, and any residual spray, used for insects or weeds, has disappeared after several days of sprouting.
The difference between Sprouts and Microgreens, is that Sprouts, refer to eating the whole shoot, leaf, stem and roots, these are traditionally grown in a glass jar with gauze over the top or a lid with holes in it, for a period of 1 week. Personally, we find using 2 sizes of colander with covers, to be by far, the best method for sprouts. See the sprouts section, but basically, the colanders give better aeration and easier husk removal, and of course comes with its own drip bowl.
When we are talking about Microgreens, we are referring to seeds that are grown in a medium and you just cut the leaves, at 1.5 to 2 weeks, and then you replant again. For baby leaf 4+ weeks, where you harvest the leaves for a longer period.
The seeds that I use for sprouting on a weekly basis is a mix of Broccoli, Kale, Radish, Alfalfa, Red Clover, Fenugreek.
The seeds that I use for microgreens, again planting and harvesting on a weekly basis are Snow Pea, Daikon Radish, and sometimes Kale.
The seeds I regularly use for herb leaf are, Rocket, Basil normal and Basil Thai.
All these I grow inside under LED lights, the only thing I grow outside is Mint.
Note – we have 3 types of Pea seeds. Snow Pea, which gives me the green leaf base for my salad. Massey Gem pea which is basically the same as the pea that you purchase in the supermarket, it is very similar to the Snow pea in taste and texture, meaning it does not become fibrous and chewy, just melts in your mouth, but cheaper, however it does not produce as much leaf. My preference is to use the Massey Gem Pea as a sprout rather than as a Microgreen. The 3rd pea is generically called a Field pea, which you often get in a restaurant with a tiny bit of leaf and a long stalk, very cheap, but the stem tends to be very fibrous and therefore chewy. Good for blending or juicing.
Red kale is probably the most flexible as it can be grown as a Sprout, as a Microgreen (1.5 weeks), baby leaf, and a full leaf plant. Select the Product Group button to go to that Group Or Click text to hide
