This kit consists of one large colander with cover + 2 x mesh bags + 250ml of bio-activated organic nutrients along with a selection of seeds or not + Fridge Storage System.
The idea here is that you Sprout the seeds in the mesh bag for the 1st 3 or 4 days, and then transfer them to the large colander for the final stage of greening and de-husking and then storage in the fridge. When the sprouts are ready you stop soaking and draining them and leave them to dry for 1-2 days and then store them in the other mesh bag inside the cotton bag inside a plastic bag. You can then start sprouting again in your other mesh bag. This saves you the cost of extra small colanders with covers but not quite as convenient in my opinion, a little bit more fiddly and cleaning the mesh bag is a bit of a pain. Click to hide.

Here we see the steps involved in this process: – soaking the seeds overnight in bowl/cup with the nutrients supplied (warm water in winter). Rinse clean and allow for one day before soaking again in the nutrient solution for 10 to 20 minutes, rinse clean (open bag and allow tap water to run through the sprouts), when the bag is full, empty them into the large colander and proceed to soak rinse and de-husk for the next 2 or 3 days allowing the sprouts to green up. Here we see the Fenugreek sprouts, after another day in the large colander they have begun to shed their husk most of these will be washed over the edge just by creating a small wave movement with your hand. Un-sprouted seeds and waterlogged husk, will remain on the bottom and for the last couple of days I recommend you take the bulk of the sprouts from the grill and place them in the base, give the grill a quick rinse getting rid of any un-sprouted or husks that have sunk to the bottom, then placing the grill on top of the base tip it upside down and proceed with your soak and rinse procedure. This is the method I now use to store my sprouts and salad greens also other vegetables. If it is leafy greens like sprouts then it's best to store them 1st in a mesh bag, the reason for this is that any damp material will not stick to the cotton bag (meaning you do not have to wash the cotton bag every time you change it). So the simple procedure is put the sprouts and or leafy greens inside the mesh bag, zip it up, place inside the cotton bag, then place inside a plastic bag that doesn't have any holes in it, gently squeeze the air out and secure with the clip.
The trick is to make sure that the sprouts or leafy greens or your entire salad mix is not too wet. To achieve this with the sprouts I leave them at a 45° angle with no cover for half a day then I remove any water in the base and turn the sprouts upside down and leave for another half a day. Because we’ve been soaking these once-a-day in the nutrient solution the sprouts are full of moisture, and it is only the outside edges that are drying, so after adding to the mesh bag, cotton bag, plastic bag, each day I just swap the cotton bag and turn the plastic bag inside out. Actually, I normally mix my sprouts (after the drying process above) with my microgreens once per week giving me enough salad for the week and I change the cotton bag, invert the plastic bag, daily as above, this habit stops me leaving them for too long and the cotton bag becoming mouldy. The reason for the 2 cotton bags is to make it easy to swap them over, which you need to do on a regular basis if your vegetable item is producing too much moisture and the inside of the plastic bag has a lot of condensation on it. The idea here is that you Sprout the seeds in the mesh bag for the 1st 3 or 4 days, and when they are large enough you transfer them to the large colander for the final stage of greening and the de-husking and then storage in the fridge. So here you are using a Sprout bag instead of the small colanders with cover obviously the big advantages is price however it is a little bit more fiddly and cleaning the mesh bag is a bit of a pain. You will also need a bowl that you can rest the mesh bag in with the sprouts so that they can drain, so a bowl with something in it that the mesh bag can sit on e.g. pebbles or an upside down smaller plate or bowl.
When it comes to storage you have the option of storing it inside the mesh bag inside the large colander (making sure you cover the drain holes on the side of the base), the limiting factor with this method is the amount of room that you have in your fridge as the large colander is 4L – dimensions (330L x 290W x 140H). The way that I now do it is using the combination of mesh bag, cotton bag, plastic bag. The trick being with this method is to make sure the sprouts are not too wet, so for the last 2 days you leave the sprouts at an angle in the large colander, this works really well all you have to do is place the grill section with the sprouts at an angle and across the base. After one day take the sprouts and turn them upside down so that the moisture at the bottom gets a chance to try out for the final day. You may also wish to add the lid during the night just to ensure there are no unwanted visitors to your sprouts during the evening.
